The Disability Discrimination Act

Key elements of The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA)

Overall Purpose of the Act

The purpose of the Act is to end discrimination against disabled people in employment and access to goods, facilities and services.

The DDA

Since the 2nd of December 1996 it has been unlawful for service providers or employers to treat disabled people less favorably for a reason related to their disability compared with a non-disabled person. The DDA says that a reasonable adjustment has to be made.

Since the 2nd of December 1996 it has been unlawful for service providers or employers to treat disabled people less favorably for a reason related to their disability compared with a non- disabled person. Adjustments fall into three main areas:

* Changing policies, Procedures and Practices

* Providing auxiliary aids and services

* Overcoming a physical feature by:

* Removing the feature or Altering it or Avoiding it or Providing services by alternative methods

DDA 2005

The DDA 2005 ended the exemption under the act for all private clubs, So From 6th December 2005 all private clubs have to look at their obligations under the act and start to implement changes which other service providers had been doing since 1994. It also included Cancer Patients from the date of diagnoses and other illnesses like ME and HIV.

Facts & Figures

The following statistics are taken from a wide-ranging survey undertaken by the Office of Population Census and Statistics between 1985 and 1988.

This is the most comprehensive information we have about people with disabilities in Great Britain .

8.7 million people with some degree of hearing loss (source: RNID)

Over 1 million people with a learning disability (source: MENCAP)

Over 250000 people with severe facial disfigurement (source: Changing Faces)

Nearly 1 million blind or partially sighted people (source: RNIB)

Almost 70% of disabled adults are 60 or over (source: (OPCS))
